Why Groomers Pick the Orange Miller's Forge Nail Clippers Over the Red
Dog nail clippers that cut clean at first, then pinch and trap the clipped bit? Groomers swapped for the same clipper in a different handle colour.

Plier-style dog nail clippers are the ones with two blades that close like scissors and spring back open. They cut clean when they're new. Then one day the blades pinch the nail instead of cutting it, and the dog pulls away.
There's a second, stranger fault. The clipped-off bit of nail stays wedged between the blades, and you have to flick it out before the next toe. Do that for every toe on four paws and the job drags.
If your dog nail clippers have started pinching, or the clipped nail sticks in the blade, a thread in r/doggrooming has a simple fix. Same brand, same design, different handle colour.
What goes wrong with the red ones?
Miller's Forge has made the same plier-style pet nail clipper for over forty years, according to two of its retailers. The classic version has red handles and a safety bar behind the blades.
The same clipper also comes with orange handles, in a medium and a large. The orange-handled Miller's Forge is the one this piece is about.
A groomer started a thread in r/doggrooming called "Miller's Forge Nail Clippers Dulling?". They were on their second set of the red ones in under a year. The blades had stopped cutting, and the clipped part of the nail was getting stuck in the blade.
They couldn't find anyone nearby who sharpens nail clippers. They didn't want to keep buying new pairs either.
The first reply had the same complaint about the red ones, and it went further. Theirs stuck even when they were new. The blades cut like butter, but the clipped nails jammed from day one. Their orange ones, they said, work great.
What's different about the orange ones?
The second reply came from a groomer of about fifteen years, on their third pair.
I do know when a pair starts to dull because it pinches more than cuts the nail and the dogs definitely react to it. I use the orange handled ones over the red ones, though, which I think are more heavy duty so maybe they last longer.

That "I think" is honest. Nobody in the thread took the two apart, and neither have we. What the retailers say does line up with the guess, though.
The red pair's listing at PetEdge describes "comfortable plastic grips and a built-in blade guard to prevent overcutting". The orange pair's listing at Groomer's Choice describes "heavy-duty spring loaded action" and a clipper built for busy grooming shops. It mentions no guard.
So the difference the groomers feel in their hands is the one the catalogue describes. The orange is the heavier-built pair, sold to busy grooming shops. The red is the general-purpose pair, with a guard to stop a nervous hand cutting too far.

Who else says so?
A thread in r/VetTech asked what people keep in their pouch, and whether anyone had a favourite brand of nail trimmers. One vet tech did. The orange-handled ones are their "absolute favourites", used on everything from cats to large dogs.
That's three people across two trades, in two threads that don't know about each other. A vet tech and two groomers, all reaching for the orange over the red.
It isn't a survey. In the same r/VetTech thread, another tech said the Miller's Forge "red and orange are great nail trimmers", and left it there. Some people are perfectly happy with the red pair, and that tech is one of them.
What the orange ones give up
The guard. The red pair's safety bar sits behind the blades and stops you taking too much nail in one bite. Nothing on the orange pair's listing suggests it has one.
A guard is there to stop you clipping into the quick. If you're new to trimming your own dog's nails and not yet sure where the quick sits, that's the reason to think twice. The red pair with its bar is still a sound clipper.
The other thing to know is the size. The medium orange pair is what the groomers and the vet tech describe. Miller's Forge also sells a large orange-handled pair for big dogs. Its listing title doesn't mention the colour, so look at the photo before you pay.
What to check before you buy
- The handle colour in the photo. The medium listings say "orange" in the title. The large one doesn't, so the picture is what tells you.
- Whether you want the guard. Red has one, orange doesn't appear to. Nobody in either thread mentions missing it.
- The size of the dog. The red pair's own listing says it suits just about all sizes except very large breeds. The orange medium covers the same ground, and the large is for the breeds it doesn't.
- Sticking versus dulling. A pair that traps the clipped nail from the first week isn't dull. That's the fault two groomers describe on the red, and it isn't one a sharpener would solve.

Start with the medium orange-handled Miller's Forge. That's the pair a fifteen-year groomer has bought three times over and a vet tech uses on cats and big dogs alike. Move up to the large orange pair only for a dog the medium struggles with.
A first-time trimmer who wants the guard should buy the red pair instead, and keep a thumbnail free for flicking the blades clear.
